Colocation and Collocation in the London Data Centre
What is a Colocation Data Centre?
A colocation - or collocation - data centre is an independently owned and run facility where multiple data or telecommunications carriers locate their connections next to one another and to their customers, enabling customers in the building to interconnect to them with a minimum amount of cost and complexity.
Redcentric’s London data centre is an excellent example of a carrier neutral, central London data centre. We are located at the centre of the world’s internet backbone and we offer the highest levels of reliability and resilience, coupled with deep industry knowledge and proven experience, developed over more than twenty years of data centre and colocation operations on the same site.
Why are there so many spellings?
Usage of the word colocation varies all over the world, and there is no agreed spelling.
- Colocation - Colocation is the most common spelling in both Europe and the USA.
- Collocation - Collocation is a concept used by linguists to describe specific combinations of words, see collocation here, for example. Microsoft Word uses collocation as its default spelling, automatically changing colocation to collocation. For this reason, collocation is the second most common usage after colocation.
- Co-location - Co-location is an alternative linguistic form of colocation, where a hyphen is included, in much the same way as people include a hyphen in words like co-operation, although it is not technically necessary.
- Co location - Co location means the same as colocation, just differently presented, without the hyphen - but with a break in the word to aid pronunciation.
- Colo - Abbreviations are common in the technology industry, and the world colocation is often abbreviated to just colo for ease, especially when speaking.
- Co-lo - Even abbreviations of colocation are sometimes amended colloquially, and a hyphen is often used, as it is with the full word.
- Co lo - Likewise, the option to use two words separated with a space rather than a hyphen, is common practice.
