Colocation and Collocation spellings

Colocation and Collocation in the Data Centre

What is a Colocation Data Centre?

A colocation data centre is an independently owned and run facility where multiple data or telecommunications carriers locate their connections next to one another, enabling customers in the building to interconnect to them with a minimum amount of cost and complexity.

City Lifeline is an excellent example of a carrier-neutral, central London colocation data centre. We are located at the centre of the world’s internet backbone and we offer the highest levels of reliability and resilience, coupled with deep industry knowledge and proven experience

Why are there so many spellings?

Usage of the word colocation varies all over the world, and there is no agreed spelling. If the differing spellings of colocation are not what you were looking for, please click visit our London colocation page.

  • Colocation - Colocation is the most common spelling in both Europe and the USA.
  • Collocation - Microsoft Word uses collocation as its default spelling, automatically changing colocation to collocation. For this reason, collocation is the second most common usage after colocation. For collocation in data centres, see collocation.
  • Co-location - Co-location is an alternative linguistic form of colocation, where a hyphen is included, in much the same way as people include a hyphen in words like co-operation, although it is not technically necessary. For co-location of servers and other electronic equipment, see co-location.
  • Co location - Co location means the same as colocation, just differently presented, without the hyphen - but with a break in the word to aid pronunciation. For carrier neutral co-location, see co location.
  • Colo - Abbreviations are common in the technology industry, and the world colocation is often abbreviated to just colo for ease, especially when speaking. For installing telecoms or servers in a ‘colo’, see colo.
  • Co-lo - Even abbreviations of colocation are sometimes amended colloquially, and a hyphen is often used, as it is with the full word. To find out more about Tier 3 ‘co-lo’, see co-lo.
  • Co lo - Likewise, the option to use two words separated with a space rather than a hyphen, is also common practise. To find out about carrier neutral co lo, see co lo.

Why City Lifeline?

We are independent, privately owned and have some of the best connectivity in London, even when compared to the larger players in Docklands. Our key strength is that we are small enough to be flexible and to know our customers personally, yet large enough to be able to invest in the plant, equipment, services and people needed to run a first-class Data Centre.
