Data Centre Security

Lifeline House is security staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Security guards are trained, qualified and accredited. They make decisions and take immediate action when matters affecting building or customer security arise. Things are dealt with courteously and firmly by a real human being who knows what he is doing.

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)

Complete external CCTV monitoring and floodlighting where needed, is installed. Movements out-of-hours are detected and alerted by automatic analysis of the camera images and by separate electronic movement sensors.

CCTV is recorded for evidence and analysis purposes, and notices make it clear to any potential intruder that they are being watched and recorded.

Biometric controlled access

Person access to Lifeline House is through controlled turnstiles. Access is available on a 24/7 no-notice basis to persons pre-approved by you, and on a permission-based control system for persons not pre-approved.

Out-of-hours, all entry points are blocked by mechanical roller shutters, leaving only fully-alarmed one-way reinforced fire escape doors.

Within the London data centre, access is controlled through biometric fingerprint scanners. Access is granted by Security on a daily basis to specific, controlled areas of the facility. Your access is secure, quick and easy.

Removal of equipment

Removal of equipment from the colocation data centre is managed through permission-based procedures, where only persons whom you have designated can authorise removal.

Security

City Lifeline’s security keeps you and your hosted equipment safe from thieves or interference. You can access your equipment at any time of the day or night, without prior notice if necessary, but no-one else can touch it or remove it without your knowledge and permission.

Electrical power in Lifeline House

The electrical systems in our data centre are designed to Tier 3 levels of reliability. Electrical power is delivered to the data centre on dual fully-redundant feeds through a resilient ring structure. Both feeds from the onsite substation continue to operate securely and reliably even if one half of the ring is lost.

Automatic switchover to diesel power

If a power feed fails, automated detection systems load-shed the chillers to on-site diesel generator plant, leaving the electronics power to run from the remaining feed. If both power feeds fail, full automated switchover to diesel generator backup occurs.

The on-site power generation capacity available is more than enough to power the whole Central London colocation data centre indefinitely. Twin generators to 2N standards ensure full power performance even if one generator fails. The on-site fuel tanks provide four days continuous running, and contracted priority refuelling ensures deliveries even in the most extreme emergency.

Triple UPS for reliable colocation

Electronic equipment and hosted servers in the London colocation data centre are supplied from three independent pairs of Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS), all 2N configuration, all dual-stringed, and all covered by fast-response manufacturer’s service contracts.

-48 volt dc power for telecoms

Specialised colocated telecoms equipment is fed from a 2N fully redundant -48 volt dc onsite power system. dc power is available in all common rack rooms and private suites.

Secure and reliable power in the data centre

Power in the London colocation data centre is carefully thought through to deliver Tier 3 standards of reliability and resilience and to absolutely guarantee secure and reliable power supplies to your equipment.

So you can spend your time and concentration on the things that matter to you, not on whether your equipment will stay running.

Cooling

Cooling is a critical facility for hosted servers and telecommunications equipment and for any London data centre. For consistent, reliable, high-integrity services, equipment must operate within its optimum temperature and humidity envelope at all times.

Fully redundant chillers

Cooling throughout the colocation data centre is via multiple independent sets of modular inverter-driven direct expansion (DX) chillers. In common data centre rack areas the chillers are duplicated, fully redundant 2N systems, with each set specified to handle more than the whole of the heat load. Colocation suites are built to individual customer requirements, and have the cooling systems, margins and levels of redundancy that the customer specifies.

Reliable environment

The cooling systems ensure your server hosting or colocated telecoms equipment is always operating within its optimum environmental conditions. The environment is immune to any failure in the cooling systems or the electrical feeds to them. It just works and you don’t have to worry about it.

Fire protection

Fire is a rare occurrence in a well-run colocation data centre these days. Modern server and telecoms equipment contains little combustible material. But precautions and protections are still needed.

Fire rarely occurs without warning. City Lifeline has qualified, well-trained technical staff performing regular, scheduled alarm system checks and inspections of all risk areas.

Smoke detection and gas suppression

Common rack areas are fitted with VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection and Alarm) systems. An alarm is immediately investigated by Security or the technical team. Where appropriate, gas-based fire suppression systems are also fitted. Colocation suites are built to individual customer requirements, and have the fire precautions that the customer specifies.

Safety from fire

All the necessary precautions and procedures against fire in our London data centre have been put in place.

Any risks will be dealt with proactively before they become problems. Any signs of smoke will be detected early and acted upon swiftly. Any real fire in the data centre will be quickly and effectively suppressed.

Your equipment is safe from any fire risk.

Monitoring the Data Centre

City Lifeline has developed a sophisticated in-house monitoring system to oversee and display the active status of all critical elements of our data centre.

Alerts on the move

The system shows the technical staff any changes to the data centre on i-Phones, even when they are on the move. Alerts are automatically raised if any parameter moves outside its acceptable range. Technical staff know immediately what is happening and can decide if any action is needed, even if they are not in the colocation data centre at the time.

History recording in the data centre

The entire history of the data centre is recorded at three second interval for the previous five years. Long-term trends in the colocation data centre and energy improvements can then be calculated.

Reliability and service

You know that the technical staff are always fully informed and aware and that they can and will deliver the level of service and reliability that you need.
