City Lifeline launches new THN interlink to cut data centre customers’ costs and risk

City Lifeline, the central London colocation data centre, has today announced its own diverse private dark fibre interlink to the Telehouse North (THN) interconnection point in the Docklands. With many international and independent carriers having established a point of presence at THN, this interlink will allow customers to interconnect quickly, easily and cost-effectively between City Lifeline’s data centre in central London and THN at speeds between 1Mb/sec and 10Gb/sec.

The new interlink allows for critical operations to be administered from two data centre locations, mirroring each other, which alongside City Lifeline’s recent ISO 270001 accreditation, heightens data security. The loss of either data centre location does not then cause a loss of service to the customer.

City Lifeline scraps brown electricity in favour of 100 per cent green IT

Central London colocation data centre City Lifeline is overhauling its electricity policy in order to run on 100 per cent green electricity by July 2012. The move marks the company’s latest milestone in the quest to become one of London’s most environmentally friendly data centres.

Green IT is clearly a focus for today’s data centres, but it seems that practice is still lagging behind policy. A recent study by the Symantec Corporation found that while 97 per cent of businesses were discussing green IT, only 45 per cent had already implemented green IT projects.

Thanks to a new agreement with EDF Energy, City Lifeline will only run on electricity which has been renewably sourced. This decision complements a number of eco-friendly measures which have been put in place by the company.

These include improving the efficiency of the data centre’s chillers and other cooling systems, using energy efficient duel-diesel generators for back-up power and fitting movement-detection light sensors throughout the data centre.

Roger Keenan, MD of City Lifeline, comments: “Our decision is especially important in light of expert estimations that almost two per cent of the nation’s electricity is used to power computers and telecoms equipment, most of it in specialised data centres.

Colocation data centre offers Tier 3 performance levels for mission-critical IT and telecoms and invests £600,000 in two new diesel generators

In response to customer demand for more secure and resilient operations for mission-critical equipment, City Lifeline, the London-based independent carrier-neutral colocation data centre, now offers its customers colocation to Tier 3 standards. The key to this is a new dual-diesel generator system, installed following a £600,000 investment, which can support the whole facility electrical load even with one generator set out of service for maintenance.

Tier 3, otherwise known as “concurrent maintainability”, means that City Lifeline can now offer its customers electrical power, cooling and bandwidth systems which are always available even if a part fails, is switched off or is being maintained. It provides a reliable operating environment for the customer which is resistant to failures or an incorrect operation. Tier 3 standards allow customers to sleep at night, restfully knowing that nothing can go wrong to affect their equipment operations.

New survey reveals worrying reliance on one data centre despite high number of outages

Over three-quarters of IT and operations managers (79%) have suffered significant outages that disrupted their online business and affected delivery of services to their customers, according to a recent survey conducted by City Lifeline at this year’s Internet World.

City Lifeline questioned over 150 IT and operations managers from a number of internet-based businesses and uncovered that 18 per cent of these outages were caused by data centre failure, 45 per cent were caused by failure of their internet communications and 16 per cent from another cause. A fortunate 21 per cent said they had never suffered any such outage.

In addition to this, nearly half of managers questioned (42%) admitted that their business relies on one external data centre to deliver services to their customers, with 17 per cent depending on two, 10 per cent relying on three or more and 31 per cent keeping all their operations in-house.

“Companies reliant on Internet communications, in particular, need to be resilient and ensure that wherever possible everything runs on at least two well-spaced sites, operated by at least two companies independent of each other, with automatic fall-over and diverse communications between them.”

60 per cent of UK SMEs hit by IT failures

2 November 2011 – A worrying 60 per cent of respondents surveyed[i] by City Lifeline at this year’s IP Expo have lost access to the company’s IT system following an unexpected incident. The resulting unplanned downtime lasted for more than six hours for 40 per cent of the firms surveyed, leaving employees struggling to access essential business data, run operations or communicate effectively with customers.

Unplanned downtime can have serious financial repercussions. Whether caused by equipment failure, a cyber-attack or something as mundane as road works cutting through a power line, studies show that the loss of access to data and electronic communication systems costs SMEs on average around £7,500 a day in lost business and productivity: ranging from £1,800 for micro-businesses to £14,000 a day for mid-sized enterprises[ii].

In a worst case scenario the lost data can never be recovered. According to the Federation of Small Businesses, 90 per cent of SMEs that lose data following a major incident are forced to shut within two years. Yet research shows that less than half of SMEs bother to back up data every week, and a mere 23 per cent back up daily[iii].

“SMEs are by their nature more vulnerable to the impact of data loss,” said Roger Keenan, managing director at City Lifeline. “Our survey reveals just how many small and medium-sized companies have experienced an IT failure – and for around two thirds of respondents, the resulting downtime lasted for at least half a day. Six hours of downtime effectively amounts to a lost working day. This inevitably means reduced productivity, missed business and unhappy customers and suppliers, something many smaller firms simply cannot afford. It is vital that SMEs make sure important files are saved not only on an external hard drive but in a safe and secure offsite location. Colocation data centres are created to avoid disasters or at least able to cope with them protecting the equipment and servers hosted inside. Most importantly, they are designed to protect a business’ critical IT systems.”

New survey reveals fears of double-dip recession will not stop IT spending next year

12 November 2010 – Over three-quarters of IT managers (86 per cent) will continue spending on IT services and equipment next year, despite the threat of a looming double-dip recession and recent spending review, according to a survey conducted by City Lifeline at this year’s IP Expo.

When questioned, 74 per cent of IT managers also claimed they are prepared to spend between five to ten per cent extra on purchasing green IT equipment and services. The survey, conducted over two days at the IP Expo exhibition, interviewed just over 100 IT managers from both the private and public sector.

Roger Keenan, managing director at City Lifeline comments, “It’s really encouraging to witness a positive outlook on the subject of IT spend for 2011. Many of the IT managers we spoke to realise the value of investing in the latest IT advancements to ensure their organisations remain competitive during what are still quite difficult times.

“IT managers also clearly see the long-term benefit of investing in green IT and are prepared to spend more on green technologies as they know they will save money over time by using more efficient equipment and services. Plus, many of the IT managers we spoke with are being encouraged by senior management to be green either for CSR or financial reasons.”

City Lifeline’s survey also revealed that 57 per cent of IT managers rate security as their top priority when selecting a data centre, followed by price (14 per cent) and a good choice of network and telecoms providers (12 per cent).

Respondents were also asked if they would be tempted to locate their critical equipment in a remote location to save money. Nearly two thirds were concerned that connectivity and security would be adversely affected if they located equipment remotely; with 26 per cent of this group saying they wouldn’t even consider operating their equipment in a remote location, such as Northern Scotland or Iceland.

All respondents were automatically entered into a prize draw to win the latest iPod Nano. Following the exhibition City Lifeline held a draw and awarded the new iPod Nano to Ms May Phoon, database and ICT officer at Bond, a UK membership body for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working in international development.
